FUMIE — Between Faith and the Soles of Her Feet —
The air in Japan's Edo period was thick with tension as the fumie test loomed over every visitor's head. The foreign woman, Alice, stood before a daunting image of Buddha, her heart racing in her chest. She knew that one wrong step could cost her everything—her faith, her life, or even worse, the soles of her feet.
Alice closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. She couldn't help but feel the weight of history pressing down on her as she waited for the inspector's command. When she felt his presence approach, she steeled herself for what was to come.
"Step forward, please," the inspector's deep voice boomed, echoing through the empty hall. Slowly, with shaking legs, Alice took one small step forward. She felt the cold marble of the floor against her bare feet, sending shivers up her spine.
The inspector watched intently as Alice's eyes slowly opened, their gaze meeting for the first time. He could feel the intensity of her faith radiating off of her, and he knew that this would not be an easy task.
"Place your right foot upon the fumie," the inspector commanded, his voice calm yet commanding. Alice hesitated for a moment, her heart pounding in her chest. With a deep breath, she lifted her right foot off the ground and brought it down softly upon the image of Buddha before her.
Time seemed to stand still as they all held their breath, waiting for the verdict. Alice felt the weight of the world on her shoulders, praying silently that she had made the right decision. Finally, the inspector spoke.
"You may leave," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. Alice turned and walked away, her steps heavy with the knowledge of what she had just done. As she disappeared from view, she couldn't help but wonder what would become of her next.
